4th edition of the Basel Single Cell & Spatial Day

On June 18, the Gehry Auditorium on the Novartis Campus was buzzing with around 250 scientists for a deep dive into single cell and spatial biology. Co-hosted by 10x Genomics and Novartis, the event bridged cutting-edge science with real-world troubleshooting, wrapping up with a great evening out at the Basso bar.

  • An all-star lineup: We hosted back-to-back talks and flash presentations from a brilliant mix of European biotech startups, leading academic centers (like EMBL and the Wellcome Sanger Institute), and major pharma players including Novartis, Roche, and Sanofi.
  • Tech & troubleshooting: Our VP of Biology, Peter Smibert kicked things off with a keynote on scaling biology, paired perfectly with an onsite first look at the Atera instrument. Attendees also connected with experts from Myllia, ProPath, CeGaT, SPT Labtech, BioTuring, Akoya, and Single Cell Discoveries to troubleshoot real experiments.

See you next year? Planning for our 5th edition is already underway! If you want to secure your spot early, let us know, and we’ll make sure you are the first in line when registration opens.

Technology spotlight: CRISPR

Publication: Single cell CRISPR screen pinpoints new T-ALL tumor suppressor

Researchers at KU Leuven and VIB (Belgium) used single cell CRISPR screening on the Chromium Single Cell platform to dissect gene function in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Screening 42 recurrently mutated but poorly understood genes in human T-cell precursors, the team identified BCL11B as a potent tumor suppressor — its loss unleashed uncontrolled proliferation via STAT and NOTCH pathway activation. The work offers a roadmap for uncovering functional drug targets in genetically complex cancers.

Webinar: Curious to learn more how our single cell assays enable combinatorial CRISPR screening research? Join us on Tuesday, July 21, and hear from two speakers from the industry and academia:

  • From single to combinatorial CRISPRa screens: Mapping transcription factor-driven differentiation in iPSCs, Sejla Salic-Hainzl, bit.bio
  • Programming human iPSC fate with combinatorial, inducible CRISPRa/i and single cell genomics, Alessandro Bertero, University of Torino
  • Discover how Flex Apex and the new VIPerturb-seq method make genome-wide, single-cell CRISPR perturbation screens more sensitive, scalable, and affordable — enabling up to a million perturbations with just ~2,000 probes, Stacey Abidayo, 10x Genomics

Single cell blood analysis with Flex Apex

Easy collection. Single cell resolution. Impactful results.

When blood samples and single cell analysis meet, researchers have access to an incredible source of actionable insights. The resulting data can drive the discovery of novel biomarkers, investigations into disease progression, and more accurate views of drug mechanisms of action.

Single cell transcriptomics is a powerful tool for blood biology. With our latest protocols, blood samples can be collected and processed on a schedule that fits your project needs:

  • Stabilize blood at the moment of collection for easier multi-site studies
  • Collect blood samples anywhere, no need for lab access or intervention at the collection site
  • Keep samples at room temperature or 4°C for up to 3 days, or freeze long-term before processing
  • Capture deeper insights with options for protein or TCR/BCR profiling
