Uncover the “Where” for every “What” when you map the location of gene expression in tissue

The relationship between cells and their relative locations within a tissue sample can be critical to understanding disease pathology. Visium is a groundbreaking spatial transcriptomics technology that allows scientists to measure all the gene activity in a tissue section and map where the activity is occurring. Already, this technology is leading to new discoveries that will prove instrumental in helping scientists gain a better understanding of biological processes and disease, but we want to hear from you. Share your ideas on how impactful and useful this technology will be in excelling your scientific research.

Challenge Details

Submit an abstract (maximum of 300 words) proposing a project that uses the Visium Spatial Gene Expression Solution. This solution provides an unbiased, whole transcriptome approach to layering gene expression data onto tissue morphology validated on fresh-frozen tissue samples. Please specify the question you are hoping to answer, how this technology will help you, the sample types used, the number of tissue sections being studied (maximum 2 samples for this pilot grant), the estimated timeline for having these tissue sections ready, and how the results will inform your future studies. A 10x Genomics committee will review and select the winner based on research creativity, scientific impact, and innovation.

CSMC's Applied Genomics, Computation & Translational Core will process the selected winner’s samples through the Visium Spatial Gene Expression assay workflow. This award covers 10x Genomics Visium kits, library preparation, and bioinformatics (sequencing not included, and some Core service fees may apply). Please note that tissue sections must be fresh-frozen OCT-embedded. (FFPE processing will be available in early 2021, but will not be accepted for this grant.) Though a maximum of 2 tissue sections can be analyzed for spatial gene expression along with H&E staining (same section is used for both), we will request an additional 6 sections for pre-optimization. Imaging and gene expression data files, processed by Space Ranger software, will be provided by AGCT in a format that can be uploaded into our Loupe Browser software for analysis. Applicants must hold primary research positions and must be planning to submit a grant application to support a broader research aim for which they need pilot data. Applicants may not hold current awards directly related to the proposed research.

Abstract submissions will be accepted starting September 11, 2020 and ending October 5, 2020.
